HAITI HUMANITARIAN DISASTER BIGGEST IN SEVERAL DECADES

See Slide show

The aftermath of Cyclones Hanna and Ike caused massive flashfloods in the Artibonite valley, submerging the city of Gonaives between September 2 and 4 under 9 feet of water and leaving a path of destruction behind. The full scale of the disaster is hard to estimate because of the isolation of the worst hit area, however according to official radio forecasts this is one of the biggest natural calamities to hit the country in decades. The entire NW of the country is cut off from land access, food is scarce and trickles in only through the rare UN ship convoys. With the population already living on the edge after a shock-wave of rising food prices, this current disaster will shortly become a major humanitarian crisis of profound proportions.

This message is an urgent appeal for donations and other support for this operation. MORE

Welcome to AMURT-Haiti! We are a professional volunteer NGO active in community empowerment and sustainable development programs in the NW of Haiti. Our diverse initiatives focus on creating a community-based model of integrated planning and human/natural resource management in the Anse Rouge bio-region. Before 2005 the Coridon residents on this photo used to walk for 3 hrs to the nearest water source and health clinic - they are now able to enjoy clean drinking water, quality heath care, and improved salt production with the help of AMURT's facilitation and partnership. Our joint effort has been made possible through the commitments of dedicated volunteers and donors who share our development approach that no force can stop the power of our creative collective mind and our desire for self-realization and service for humanity.

"Let everybody be happy;
let everybody be free from all physical or psychic ailments;
let everybody see the bright side of everything;
let nobody be forced to undergo any trouble under pressure of circumstances.
"
