Community Members I Other NGOs I Volunteers I Staff

"The AMURT and AMURTEL team in Haiti are an intelligent bunch firmly dedicated to accomplish their goal of empowering the communities to stand on their own and meet their basic requirements of life. Moreover, they are not interested in conventional profit for themselves but are driven by higher objectives. They live together with the local people, and this allows them to feel the pulse of the community and tune very well to its needs and aspirations. "

Dr. Gordon Sato, Recipient of the 2005 Blue Planet Award
Note: Gordon Sato has supported the natural resource initiatives of AMURT-Haiti with financial and consultation assistance. His visit in 2006 resulted in a start-up grant of 10,000 USD which initiated a mangrove rehabilitation program. With his help AMURT was able to send to Eritrea 2 of our staff to receive training in mangrove management, which the NGO has been implementing in its conservation efforts in Anse Rouge.

"The work of AMURT in the area of Anse Rouge has brought significant qualitative changes in the living conditions for the local population. Thanks to its integrated community development program which focuses on local community empowerment and self-sufficiency the economic activities in the wider area have been revitalized. The NGO has successfully implemented infrastructure and resource management projects building irrigation and water capture systems, salt production models, and other agriculture initiatives, increasing significantly the sources of revenues and the employment possibilities for the local producers. The active policy of AMURT to introduce peaceful cooperation through conflict resolution in a previously socially unstable climate has diminished substantially the tensions and general delinquencies in the commune. The population, the local and regional authorities, and all other religious and community organizations appreciate and support actively the initiatives of AMURT in the commune. We recommend that the Canadian International Development Agency continue to actively follow-up and support the NGO and its activities. "
